NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT GROUP

The Natural Resource Management Group (NaRM-G) is one of the core community institutions under the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project (NERCORMP). Established at the grassroots level, NaRM-G functions as a village-based body dedicated to the sustainable management and development of natural resources. It brings together community members to collectively plan, implement, and monitor activities that ensure the effective use of land, water, forests, and biodiversity, which form the backbone of tribal livelihoods in the North East.

NaRM-G promotes the sustainable utilization of natural resources that are vital for rural life. By focusing on careful management of forests, soil, and water, the group helps secure food, income, and ecological balance for communities. In doing so, NaRM-G directly contributes to improving the quality of life for households while safeguarding the environment for future generations. The group also plays a central role in empowering communities by placing decision-making power in the hands of local people. By involving villagers in every stage of resource planning and management, NaRM-G ensures that traditional knowledge and indigenous practices are respected and integrated into modern approaches to development. This participatory model not only strengthens community ownership but also builds confidence among rural households.

In addition to environmental protection, NaRM-G supports local economic development by promoting eco-friendly livelihood opportunities. These include improved agricultural practices, small-scale income-generating activities, and innovations that make efficient use of available resources. Such initiatives help families enhance their income while maintaining harmony with the natural environment. Equally important is the role of NaRM-G in capacity building. Through training, awareness programmes, and exposure to new practices, members are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to manage resources more effectively. This enables them to take responsibility for their economic well-being while becoming active stewards of their natural environment.

NaRM-G also thrives on collaboration. By working closely with Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Village Development Committees (VDCs), government agencies, and civil society organizations, the group creates strong linkages that maximize resources and expertise for holistic village development. NaRM-G stands as a grassroots platform for sustainable development—protecting the environment, strengthening livelihoods, and building resilience among tribal communities of North East India. As a partner of NERCORMP, the Community Development Society (CDS) has established 32 NaRM-Gs in Churachandpur District, extending continuous handholding support and nurturing these groups to ensure their growth and effectiveness.
